best bet: Always and Then (9th)

Spot Play: Better Be Oscar A (6th)

Race 1: Claiming $50,000 Pace

(2) MACH DORO A has faced this type of competition this year with several wins, including last week’s wire-to-wire romp. There’s no reason it can’t replicate, and it should be priced just fine. (4) The Wichita lineman made more than $20K in his last four facing $75K contenders, but I think it wasn’t enough so Dowse dropped him to this level. Note that he missed three weeks of action. (1) The sailboat Hannover took off from behind poor cover last week and the connection began protecting her by hitting her in orbit for the third time in a row. Looks like they have a legal chance with Kakali getting the drive.

Race 2: NW30000 starts pace in last 5

(1) Nandolo N has proved he can hang out with some top aged fast bowlers and clearly he needed a start last week at The Meadowlands after some time on the shelf. Bartlett is back in the bike after Lauren Tritton steps into his last one and should be ready to roll. (2) BRAEVIEW BONDI A is two for two since Alexander moves to the barn on his return from Canada and hits orbit again but the sharp kind can resist. (5) No Lu Xing has a win and a close second in his last two local starts.

Race 3: $75,000 pace claim

(5) Venier Hannover finished last in the NW5000 less than two months ago, but not before Gareth Dowsey and his team got their hands on him. Now he’s a favorite among the $75K contenders, and as my top pick he goes for a straight five. (1) Air Force Hanover initially raced well after a sick scratch before throwing in a poor attempt while entering the Gillis barn. He wasn’t terrible last week and now he lands the rail and must line up for a live trip. Both (7) BLUEBIRD RECON and (8) OZONE BLUE CHIP are equally sharp but the figures for #8 are to be canceled at the starting pace of #7. ‘Recon’ has a chance if not used too hard in the early stages.

Race 4: Claiming $50,000 Pace

(4) Ballarat Boomerang has done little wrong in all recent starts for his 33% trainer and should be well set up here and can score, despite his straight inside momentum. (1) Benji Best recently climbed the claiming ladder to the $75,000 level, but now he makes his second start with 50 and he comes in; Alexander the trainee is an obvious player. (3) The Keystone Dash was retrieved twice by García-Herrera, who paid a $20K premium to get it back, and was a strong winner last week. However, he has something to prove thus far.

Race 5: NW15000 Pace in the Last 5 Starts – $10K Gtd. Choose 5 Pools

(5) Walkinshaw was second two and three behind Ann equal places, then stuck with poor outside positions. His moves in just a few steps can make all the difference for this veteran, and while his barn is going well, few are alive another night. (2) CAN B PERFECT drops, pulls well and lifts the leading driver. (6) Southwind PETYR has talent but hasn’t shown much pace lately, which could compromise his chances here.

Race 6: NW7500 starts pace in last 5

(2) The BETTOR BE OSCAR A was claimed by Dowse Barn from its final debut for $40K, and they had success with this import earlier in the year. That fits the NW7500 and seems impossible not to use. (1) HICKFROMFRENCHLICK is on a comeback track for Schnittker and last week’s race at The Meadowlands was a big step in the right direction. (3) Dinah Bolt hasn’t won in quite some time, but she’s picked up some good shares along the way.

Race 7: $50,000 Claim Trot

(5) Steven Hanover has had a great run in all his recent outings and he seems to be due to some luck. Price should be decent. (2) MUSCLE JACK Looks like he runs a decent run, with just six starts since early June, but all he does is win, and his connections keep filling him in for the same tag. That would be awkward to take another. (3) LADY’S IMAGE has had a great season out of town and a piece could better land here.

Race 8: Open Pace

I was hesitant (4) Leonidas A was coming up off the bench but the reality is that he will beat them if he tries his normal. (1) Nobody Better A Travis Alexander was the winner on his first start after moving into the barn and he has proven in the past that he can go with these. (3) American dealer N hasn’t won at Open level here recently, but he’s got a good position and should come up with a good share.

Race 9: NW15000 starts pace in last 5

(3) Always and again drops to the level of victory, a better draw and brings Bartlett back to the bike. There’s a lot to like here. (6) Soho Lennon A made his second start coming back from a three-month layoff and while he often has trouble joining from outside positions, he doesn’t seem to have a ton of momentum inside. Does new driver Brennan take shots? (2) DELIGHTFUL TERROR has been third best in his last three attempts against the better, but he is coming off a sick scratch.

Race 10: $50,000 trot claim

(6) Cocktails n Dreams went similarly in their debut at this stage and closed well in the first start. Bartlett drives in again and may be worth a look in an area with no standouts. (2) GEMOLOGIST broke as favorites in his return to Devita Barn last week; Price figures will go up tonight. (4) Just maybe one will be relieved from layoffs after making their fourth start and maybe they have more to offer.
