Grade 1 winner JuJu’s map will meet seven-time stakes winner Free Like a Girl on Sunday in an intriguing refurbishment of the Grade 3, $200,000 Remington Park Oaks.
The 1 1/16-mile race also attracted Sunland Park Oaks winner Cleopatras Charge and is part of a lineup of eight bets on the $1.1 million Oklahoma Derby Day. Central’s special first post at 3 pm. The sky is expected to remain sunny and the maximum temperature is expected to be 89 degrees.
Map of JuJu was an Eclipse Award finalist last year for Outstanding 2-Year-Old Filly, second only to Echo Zulu, winner of the Grade 1 Alsiebids in Keeneland and the Juvenile Phillies in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Phillies. She has made three starts since then, winning an allowance in her 3-year-old debut and finishing third at both Grade 2 Mother Goose and Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks at Belmont Park.
“We’re just waiting for him to move on,” said Brad Cox, who conditions JuJu’s map for the Albaugh Family Stables. “His numbers are pretty much the same as the 2 year old. He has trained well this year in every way, just like last year.”
The map of JuJu will break from Post 5 in the eight-horse Remington Park Oaks. Florent Gerroux will board the film, removing the blinkers in a high-percentage equipment change for Cox.
Free Like a Girl was penciled in to start a wager against the Louisiana-bred at home in Delta Downs, but it was against older rivals and trainer Chassie Deville-Pomier said straight to live with 3-year-olds. Opportunity was a primary reason for moving to Remington.
“That’s the big deal,” she said. “Right now, there aren’t many of those races left at this time of year.”
Free Like a Girl exits the Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks in which she finished second behind Society, which was to start on Saturday in a Grade 1 cotillion at Parx Racing.
“I thought he ran one heck of a race,” Deville-Pomier said.
Free Like a Girl holds an 8-for-16 record for grossing over $550,000. She will be looking for her first win over a mile on Sunday.
“She’s been a remarkable filly from day 1,” said Deville-Pomier. “We know from her first two acts that she was going to be good. You wouldn’t imagine this good. She’s definitely matured, has a really pretty level head.”
Pedro Coto Jr. has post 3 to Mt.
“She knows how to run under the lights, and it can get a little cold, and I think those are things that would work well,” Deville-Pomier said. “We’ll take a shot. We can stay at home for the rest of the year.”
The Rated R superstar established himself as the top old dirt horse with his win at the $175,000 Governors Cup at Remington in August. But with the next local race for his division until December, he will make a rare appearance on the turf for the $100,000 Remington Green.
The 1 1/8-mile race attracted an entire field of 12, including Grade 2 winner Devmani, Mountaineer Stakes winner Price Talk and 2020 Remington Green winner Sunlight Song.
The Rated R Superstar has won three stakes this year at 9, his latest at a similar distance to Remington Green.
“He has been training really well, but it has been a while since he ran on the grass,” said owner Danny Caldwell. “I think he is one of those horses that will probably try. He loves to run. He likes to go out and perform. We expect him to go out and try.
“There’s enough momentum to run. If he goes out and gives us his effort, maybe we’ll be there in the end.”
At Remington Green in 2018, the Rated R Superstar closed in from 10th place and finished sixth, beating three lengths.
David Cabrera has the mount for trainer Federico Villafranco.
Cox and Gaining Ground Racing will face Price Talks, who won the West Virginia House of Delegates Speakers Cup on August 6 in their most recent debut at the Mountaineer.
“He won an off-the-turf race last time,” Cox said. “He may run off the field, but we’re hoping we’ll run on the field. He’s a good horse. We claimed him in New York this spring and ran him twice and he showed up both times. We’ve seen both his performances.” Very happy with
“We’re going to try some deep water in this part and see how it goes.”
The post in Gerroux is from 3 to Mt.
The turf equivalent for Phillies and mares is the $75,000 Ricks Memorial at 1 1/16 mile. Cox and Gerroux will team up with leading contender Angel Pam.
