Red Mile: Grand Circuit meet kicks off next week

Capped by a $3.2 million Kentucky Championship card outside the feathers of the richest meat in Kentucky harness racing history, more and more power will loom over Lexington as The Red Mile will soon head to North America’s finest for its annual fortnight of grand circuit competition. Standardbreds would welcome you.

The Grand Circuit Meet at The Red Mile will begin on Thursday, September 29 and run through Sunday, October 9 – a total of six race dates. As always, bluegrass stakes events will flourish in the first week of racing for freshmen and sophomores. Then 2-year-olds – with the second race week starting on Friday, October 7 – will take center stage in the International Stallion Stakes action for the first two days of the second week. Everything ends October 9 on the closing-day cards, including Tattersall Pace and one of America’s trotting classics, Kentucky Futurity.

The condition sheets for the first week of the Grand Circuit are now available, but please note that the draw schedule has changed from previous years. The announced deadline for each race day of the first week is listed below:
*Thursday, September 29th Card – Admission box closes on Saturday, September 24th at 9:00 a.m. (EDT)

*Saturday, October 1st Card – Admission box closes on Monday, September 26 at 9:00 a.m. (EDT)

And with the second week’s schedule shifted from Friday to Sunday, the announcement deadline will be as follows:

Finalizing the scratch time/program for each race card occurs the day after each card is drawn.

Trainer Tony Alagna and driver Yannick Gingras will attempt to stay warm from a successful Kentucky Championship season at the Grand Circuit Meet. Alagna led all coaches in wins with 37 and over $2 million, while Gingras led all drivers with 37 wins with $1.2 million in purse (only Dexter Dunn earned more with $1.6 million). However, Gingras tries to defend his driving title at the Grand Circuit Meet as well. Last year’s head coach through the fortnight, AK Swanstad, will try to regain his crown by defeating Tony Alagna with just one win.

First-run post-race time is 1 p.m. (EDT) for each race day at the Red Mile.
