Goodness Sakes tries for second Belterra turf stakes win

Goodness Sachs brings strong recent turf form to the Ohio-recognized Phillies in Friday’s $75,000 Miss Southern Ohio Stakes and going 1 1/16 miles on Belterra Park’s turf. Miss Southern Ohio shares the card with $75,000 loyalty stakes for Ohio-accredited teens.

Only three Miss Southern Ohio entrants have ever won on the turf—with Goodness Sachs the only woman to do so this year giving her the edge. Four of the entrants never walked on the surface.

Goodness Sachs, a 3-year-old coached by Robert Gorham for Mast Thoroughbreds, made his maiden start on the turf and attempted nearly two turns at the Cincinnatian Stakes in Beltra on July 1. The result was a three-long win over Bossy Lady and her Gorham-trained stablemate Out for Fun, both of whom she faces again on Friday.

Out for Fun emerged from the Cincinnatian to win the one mile allowance race on a muddy Beltra track for Gorham.

Goodness Sachs ran back into the Horizon Stakes, which were taken off the turf, and finished fifth. The top two in that race were Early Bloomer, also entered Miss Southern Ohio, and Relish the Ride, which entered the Catalaunch Stakes at Thistledown on Thursday and may provide an early clue as to the form of the horizon.

Grizabella has won three out of 13 on Belterra Turf, including the 2019 and 2020 editions of Miss Southern Ohio and the 2021 Vivasius Handicap. However, after Lively, she did not find a place in eight straight races. She returned to the winning column in the claimed dirt sprint and is now back in the stakes company for Jeff Radosevich.

The only other player to win on turf in the region is Star Rules, having won their first match on the Surface last year. Although he did win against Open Company at Colonial Downs, it was in a sprint, and he never started at stake on the turf.

All eight entrants in Loyalty are seeking a first wager win, and only two, led by Sammy and Shorty, have level experience. The gelding was a 10 1/4-length first winner for Radosevich, then finished third at Cleveland Kindergarten in Thistledown on August 13. He earned a bare speed figure of 50 for that effort, which is easily the best in the field.

Prior to finishing fourth in kindergarten, Excitement was a first-time winner thanks to the successful breeding partnership of WinStar Farms and trainer Tim Haim. The first winners to make up the rest of the field are No Bandleader, FactisimFlashy, and King Patriot; maiden Ronnie’s wind; and introduced Johns Wild River and Playing for Keeps for the first time.
